How this Journal is set, built, and held to account.
The Journal
- Published by
- BetterReviews, a studio working in stealth on the way reviews are read.
- Editorial voice
- First person, dated, signed. Every essay states what and why, and is corrected in public when it is wrong.
- First cohort
- Summer 2026. Shopify, for now.
Set in
- Display
- Fraunces, a variable serif by Phaedra Charles and Flavia Zimbardi, set at its highest optical size for the headlines.
- Text
- Euclid Flex, by Swiss Typefaces, for everything read at length.
- Colour
- Paper, ink, and one clay. The clay is rationed: it carries the eye, never the page.
Built with
- Pages
- Astro, rendered to static HTML at build time so a crawler and an answer engine receive the whole argument, not an empty shell.
- Motion
- GSAP and Lenis, hand-tuned per section. The hero plays on load; the long reads settle as you stop.
- Type delivery
- Self-hosted woff2, preloaded, so the first line sets without a third-party round trip.
Held to
- Honesty
- Illustrative figures are labelled illustrative. No measured-result claim the stealth product cannot back.
- Restraint
- No em dash, no italics, no exclamation, no emoji. The quiet is a position, not an absence of ideas.
- Corrections
- Mistakes are listed at the foot of the essay where they were found, and the date of the change is shown.
